live in washington. only one day to go before mitt romney faces off against president obama in denver and our new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows voters across the nation are placing more importance on these debates than the last time a sitting president ran and was challenged. joining me chris cizilla, managing editor of post politics.com and nbc political editor mark murray. mark, first to you, go through the numbers on the new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. others have shown tightening of the race. when you asked voters whether they are looking to these debates more than last time did. >> people are paying attention. four in ten saying this is going to matter, be important to their vote, although worth noting about six in ten of the people said this wasn't going to be all that important. when you dig inside the numbers it shows that key parts of president obama's coalition african-americans, latinos, are actually putting a high importance on the debates which actually kind of shows the challenge that mitt romney has to actually get his side as enthusiastic about it.

. but they also managed to break away briefly-- president obama for a visit to the hoover dam, and governor romney out with an aide to buy lunch, a burrito. meanwhile, their running mates made multiple stops in key states. vice president biden told a crowd in charlotte, north carolina that mitt romney would raise taxes on most americans to fund tax cuts for the wealthy. >> how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class has been buried the last four years. how in lord's name can they justify raising their taxes with these tax cuts? look, folks, we've seen this movie before. massive tax cuts for the wealthy. eliminating restrictions on wall street. let the banks write their own rules. we know where it ends. it ends in a catastrophe of the middle class and the great recession of 2008. folks, we cannot go back to that. >> woodruff: the republican national committee and the romney campaign seized on biden's remark about the middle class. they called it a "stunning admission" that the president's policies have been bad for the economy and the middle class. but biden-- at his next stop, in ashevi
airings are coming from pro-romney sponsor coming from outside interest groups. next slide. if we just look at title i c. fours, and it will be much more today about disclosure, if we just look at 501(c)(4)'s, over half of the interest group ads are coming from those groups. that give you a sense of the magnitude and you were looking just at the general election period actually slightly after that, after the last time frame, april 26 through september 8. this is a list of the top spenders on the republican side. we'll have more to say next week about ad specifically where there's been, what you're spending on and what they are saying. next slide. the other thing that we're seeing this cycle, every year as it would always likes to say that this is the most negative election ever. we are using more cautious about that, in fact some of the early releases that we did in 20 is a hold on, it is exactly the same at the end of 2010 we saw an increase and 2010 was more negative than any other cycle we have tracked back to 2000. in 2012, we're also seeing continuing to see that increase in negat
were saying you are not support of at this point of how much effort the president or mitt romney hachette -- mitt romney has put into this so far you are not a fan of either solution? >> it is more than just them. it is the team that works with them. they have not come up with something that works. >> i think neither candidate right now has a comprehensive plan that leads the six principles we're talking about. president obama does not really have a plan because his plan is his budget but his budget was rejected unanimously by the senate and house in the last two years so he has to start over again. mitt romney has a plant -- p lan he has not provided enough specifics and some of the specifics, the numbers did not at that. that is why it is critically important for both to be most pacific -- more specific, more solutions oriented in the debate so we can make an informed choice about who to support and they can claim they have a mandate. the people can then be involved to help get a fiscal burden next year. it is critically important. >> will you be watching the presidential debat
